Shitty Coffee

No, really!

The KopiCommon Palm Civet is a a small cat-like wild animal native to Indonesia and Vietnam with a fondness for ripe coffee cherries.

Once eaten, the coffee cherries take the normal route through the animal’s digestive path. The amazing thing is while the fruit of the coffee is being digested, the bean is left largely unchanged, eventually passing in the animals droppings.

The droppings and their caffeine-laden content are collected by farmers. The coffee, Kopi Luwak, is then cleaned and the green, un-roasted bean shipped to roasters.

Here's an account of the tasting experience from the folks at Life After Coffee: Cup of Poop

When we were traveling in Vietnam, my husband and I actually tried this coffee...(I know, WHY????) It was actually pretty good - but we were under the impression that it was pooped out by a weasel of some kind rather than a Kopi. We called it "Weasel Poop Coffee" and drank it at Trung Nguyen - which is like the Starbucks of Vietnam.

Thanks for your post! I decided to double-check against Wikipedia and discovered that the originating story had got it not *quite* right. Apparently the animal is called a Civet & the coffee is Kopi Luwak. Also, it turns out that as you said there is a *similar* coffee in Vietnam that is actually called Weasel Coffee! Who knew?
